2005 myKART Mega Endurance Series

In 2005, myKART introduced the myKART Mega Endurance Series which pits teams of myKART drivers against each other in a Mega Endurance of 2 hours.

The inaugural event on 8 Jan 2005 was a great success, thanks in large part to Steward's initiative and organising effort.

myKART aims to continue the Mega Endurance as a series in 2005 with an event every quarter. The format may change to allow for longer endurances. So stay tuned.

Enduro 1: Team Heavies clinch season opener

Team Heavies beat the sun and rain to take the championship honours from 13 other competing teams in the first myKART annual 2-hour endurance race.

Drama started early for Team Heavies when last minute drive contract egotiations almost resulted in the team being ineligible to enter the event. As it turned out, star driver Yip Yen had disagreed to the race fee of one nasi lemak which in his words was "a disgrace and insulting for a driver of my calibre".

Team Heavies captain, Shahrul Azlan however had other ideas. Noticing that Salehuddin "Schumi" Udi was available, he quickly drafted a contract and snagged Udi at a steal. In fact, Udi had to pay for the
drive with one nasi lemak. Now Heavies were no longer heavies.... well only 5kg heavier than the minimum weight.

At the initial practice, Heavies first driver, Khairul Hizam complained that his kart lacked power. But as it turned out, Khairul practically blitzed the whole field in the first stint. 2nd man Simon Tan and captain Azlan further consolidated their lead position through the first one and a half hours. At the final stint super sub Udi stepped into the kart and drove the final nail in the coffin of the other competitors, and posted the fastest lap time of the day of 1'11.599s. As the rain fell 5 laps from the end, Udi had to only keep the kart pointing in the right direction.

Enduro 2: Aliens master the weather to win round 2

Enduro 3: Fast n Furious storm to dominant win despite last lap drama

Fast n Furious dominated the 3rd my-KART Enduro event, beating 12 other teams to claim their first win of the season with a total 101 laps in the 100minute endurance race.

In addition to this, Fast n Furious driver Shahnaz Amin clocked the fastest lap time of 55.65secs on the piston port 100cc kart.

Team principal John King was delighted with the win stating that he was happy that all of his drivers were very consistent through out the race. The team had a minor worry 1 minute from the end of the race when the chain came off of the kart driven by their last driver Shahnaz. John was however not worried as by then they had a 3 lap advantage over the second place team Gila Racing.

Gila Racing team principal, Brian Eravelly was pleased with the results and thanked the sponsors for the support. Brian E stated that the team was the heaviest of all, but ensured that they made no mistake throughout the race. However, they too suffered a late drama when their last driver Yew Siak Jin had the chain fall off his kart after turn 6 and as a consequence lost 3 laps before he was re-started.

Gila Racing's dramas brought hope to team Cool It and Tail Happy Racing which were all on the same lap as Gila Racing at the chequered flag. Cool It finished third although a dropped transponder around 20 minutes from the end had caused them some concern. Cool It team principal, Azmee said that he was a little disappointed that their third place result had to justified. He felt that the team worked very hard and deserved better.

Enduro 4: Fast n Furious wins despite early engine problems

Fast n Furious overcame kart problems at the start of the race to win the 4th my-KART Enduro event, beating 12 other teams for their second win of the season with a total of 78 laps in the 80minute endurance race.

Second position went to Tail Happy Racing. Team Principal Fazz Rahman said he had mixed feelings about the result as although it was a good outcome by most standards, he felt that it was marred by some transponder and timing failures.

"Although we felt we could have won, Tail Happy Racing is pleased with second place as it gives us the championship win... but we need to do more on the timing systems in future to avoid the problems we faced today", said Fazz.

Gila Racing was third and team principal, Brian Eravelly was happy that Gila Racing has been consistent throughout the season. Gila Racings was perhaps the only team that maintained the same 4 drivers since the start of the season and all drivers performed well to finish on the podium for the second consecutive event.

There were a few dramas during the event as Team Full Throttle had an engine seizure very early in the race, whilst Cool It had to retire early due to engine failure. Team Rapid which had set the pace very early in the event eventually finished 9th citing transponder failure which failed to clock the correct number of laps. Other teams also had some transponder failures, but to varying degrees of impact.

However, Fazz commented that "the event overall was a successful one. However, there are areas that we need to work closely with KartQuest in order to improve the reliability of the karts, the timing systems in order to have a better outing for everyone. I would like to personally thank Azmee Ahmad, team principal of Cool It for helping out with the PA system; Yip Yen, asst team principal of Team Heavies for sponsoring the nasi lemak; Naza, TP of Team Aliens for providing the weighing scales and to everyone else for being such great sports. May we continue having great fun in 2006".

myKART logo, the chequered flag The myKART group ( http://www.my-kart.org/ ) flagged off the 2005 season of amateur karting with a 2 hour endurance event. The closed event (open only to myKART members and invitations) attracted 14 teams with 4 drivers to each team.

In addition to being the curtain raiser for the 2005 KART (Karting Amateurs Racing Team) season, the MME 2005 event was carried out in celebration of the end of the 2004 KART season which ended on 11 December 2004.

The 2004 KART champions were officially recognised at the end of the MME 2005 event with the following drivers taking the championship positions:

The main MME 2005 event started off with the team registration, weighing-in (minimum total driver weight of 250kg per team) and kart ballotting from 8am.

The race briefing was conducted by Fazz Rahman (founder of my-KART.org) and Steward Loke (MME 2005 Coordinator & Organiser). As common with all my-KART events, the briefing emphasised safety, sportsmanship, fun and espirit de cour.

The practice session started at 9:30am to allow teams and drivers to familiarise themselves with the kart and the circuit.

The race was started in the nostalgic Le Mans format whereby at the drop of the green flag, drivers would run across the track and jump into their karts for the start of the race formation lap. The race started at 10:10am and was scheduled to end at 12:10noon.

Initially, the track was wet in many places due to the rain overnight. So during the initial laps, drivers of each teams displayed a lot of caution to ensure that no incidents occurred given that no one would win the race from the first laps.

Khairul - Team Heavies, MME 2005 Team Heavies (who were not really heavy at 255kg) started towards the end of the grid (P13) as a handicap for their relative low weight compared to the others. Team Heavies gradually made up ground with their first driver, Khairul Hizam who led the race on lap 14 when a few drivers ahead of him slowed each other down in a scramble for position. Team Heavies retained their lead from there and throughout all the pitstops for driver changes.

As the race wore on, the track began to dry and Team Heavies fourth and last driver Salehuddin "Udi" burned the track with the fastest lap of the day of 1 minute 11.599 seconds.

Drama unfolded 10 minutes before the end of the race when the sky opened up and rain fell. This meant that the last few laps of the race meant that drivers had to keep their kart on the track and facing in the right direction, in order to finish the race. A few teams made up ground during this time by simply maintaining control of their karts in very difficult conditions.

For the top 3 teams, no dramas for them as they maintained their composure and brought their karts home in the same order.

The event was successfully concluded after 2 hours despite the rain and demonstrates the competitive but safe and friendly racing fun which is always promoted by myKART.

â€œI am extremely happy with the response, the competition, and the attitude of the drivers in our myKART events. The myKART Mega Enduro 2005 demonstrates that in spades and you can see for yourself the enthusiasm and appreciation of the karters hereâ€, Fazz commented.

Fazz believes that myKART memberships will continue to grow in the near future and prove that karting trully has a place amongst amateur motorsports enthusiasts. â€œAfter all, motorsports is still a very expensive sports and karting is no different. But the increasing level of interest with more operators building tracks and offerring karts for rental, karting at the amateur level does indeed become a viable hobby or sports for many enthusiasts.â€

Fazz added that â€œWe hope that amateur karting continues to grow and attract more interest particularly from local companies and organisations to support the sport for amateur karters and those keen to progress their racing careers. We are already starting to see talent emerging from myKART. We believe that myKART will be at the forefront leading the charge for the amateur karting enthusiast. We aim to popularise grassroots motorsports and believe that rental karting is where the grassroots will find an outlet. We believe that we are able to unearth some hidden talents amongst Malaysians and hope that we will be able to progress them further. The opportunities for the sport starting with the amateur crowd is limitless.â€

â€œI am thankful for the keen participation of everyone concerned and in particular those who have invested money to help build the sports like CityKarting and KartQuest. I am also glad that the Malaysian Government is taking proactive steps in building the sport through a motorsports commission.â€
