K200 - Petronas designed kart

My wife and I made a visit to the Petronas Gallery at KLCC Suria to check out the display of the Sauber-Petronas cars, but more importantly to "spy" on the Petronas designed kart.
As part of the plan to showcase its capabilities, Petronas has built a couple of the 4 stroke K200 karting engines. Nobody was around to answer my questions whether the engines have been tested or not.
Some specifications as follows:
[CSV]
displacement,0.2litres (200cc)
bore x stroke (mm),70 x 51.8
compression ratio,10.0
max power,13.8kw @ 9000rpm
max torque,16.5Nm @ 7000rpm
[/CSV]

The compact size of the 4-stroke engine is very impressive. But I heard that the engine itself may cost RM15k - double a Rotax 2-stroke engine! Let's see how they make it commercially viable. Maybe Sauber may dump Villeneuve and Petronas will offer him a seat on the Formula Petronas series????

Wow! Petronas making a definite foray into karting seriously I hope. This will definitely boost grass roots motorsports but we pray that the package will be affordable for enthusiasts for the likes of us. Fazz, you can easily pass off as the Racing Team Maestro judging from the photos (complementary Grin). Btw, is the chassis and engine designed and manufactured by Petronas in house ?
I am off to KLCC as fast as I can........vroom (4 stroke sound!!)

Not sure how serious they are, this we need to find out more. But essentially, I believe they will need a series to really showcase the kart itself.
As for the chassis - it is italian built. They have managed to mount the engine to a standard racing chassis, so that is good. I am not sure whether they plan on building their own chassis as this will be something completely different. But interesting to find out.
Racing maestro? Not sure about that, I was busy snapping photos of the kart which perhaps made me look like a spy... *lol*

Guys,
A RACING four stroke kart is not a new concept.....in fact, a few years back, there were a few engine builders who made an attempt in making 4 stroke kart engines....notably Biland, and 2 others.
I have the VROOM magazine to show you the test and one of the 2 others I mentioned used a Yamaha or Kawasaki single cylinder engine off a dual purposed Trail bike (road scrambler to u & me ).
The most successful of them all is BILAND and we actually had a few running in Shah Alam - one owned by Hishamuddin himself at one point. It's a 250cc, 2 cylinder, electric start, water cooled and sounds like a ZZR. ( Kawasaki......which is a bit far off from a Ducati )
In any case, I can tell you, it's heavy, hugely complex since it has a dry sump lub system ( as you can see on the Petronas as well ) and for the Biland - 2 carburettors to worry about. In the end, it never caught on here but I do know there was a successful championship run un Europe.
The bottomline is Petronas, whilst kudos to them for the attempt is 4 years BELAKANG in concept ( sorry Bang Min ).....and you will note that this single cyclinder thing is huge and think of the damage you will inflict on it when you roll over....Petronas was to have tested the kart about one month plus ago at Shah Alam but never turned up....
I do hope they will make it reasonably priced but like OSF said, it seems unlikely. Let's hope it's not another Fogarty Racing replica, with its stratosphere price level.
I should post some pictures of a FORMULA E Superkart.....then you know what salivating means...full body work, 2 stroke 140+mph TOP SPEED!
Anyway, Fazz - do keep us posted on the progress of this project.

The chassis looks like an old design one, just like the 1999 Tony Karts in City Karting. Looks kinda funny to me. But the chassis body doesn't matter as long as the Engine Mounts on any kart out there. Wonder how it feels like in it.

why does every engine manufacturer says that their engine is low cost? 9k rpm is quite low range.

18.492 bhp.... thats like 92.46bhp/litre in big cubes term. when i saw max rev at 9000rpm, i thought its gonna be running on pushrods to save cost. what the... got timing belt. so when that thing snaps, isnt it gonna cost more money to fix the valves etc? increase maintenance cost only.
i am not a kart engineer or engine engineer, but why la the exhaust port is facing the driver? i know got fire suits, but what happens if your suit gets torn and the freaking hot pipe touches your arm. also, isnt it against the natural movement of the air flow... i notice all 2-stroke intake port is facing the front, the exhaust naturally faces the back, makes a shorter exhaust pipe length also. but can argue that best efficiency comes with optimum length, not the shortest.
not bashing or trying to act smart, just noticed the difference of this compared to regular 2s.

wondering if My-kart members interested,he told me can test drive anytime, can you check with citykarting whether to allow them to bring for test at their track on the coming series race?

Wonder whether it is the same kart that was on display at KLCC Petrosains that Fazz was at not so long ago......cant help thinking like that when you compare the specs......aha gotcha!!

911 Zentrum finally got ready their Rosedi karts. The 200cc 4 stroke I think is a Honda or Comel engine, not a tuned one like Petronas. Their concept is to have a kart which is cheap & easy to maintain.

Wow this petronas K200 kart looks interesting. Being a 4 stroker, I wonder what the HP output and torque curve is like. At least 4 strokers are way way cheaper to maintain. The frequency of engine rebuilds should be less, cleaner combustion too.
I assume the engine's ignition is fully powered by the battery just like in a Rotax? Which means you'll have to worry about charging the battery before every race too. Electric starter is cool... just like Rotax. Don't need to ask marhalls to come and help you start your kart if you stall during a race.
