Should I STOP?

About Rd8 flipped kart incident, I was the first person to arrive at the scene (but I was also in the race). My gab with Lynda was about 5-6 seconds. So when I reached that slippery corner, I was always cautious and brake heaps so that I don't run off my racing line (safety first). So as I was taking the corner, I saw Lynda under the kart and was trying to climb out of the kart. I slowed down, thinking should I stop outside the racing line and quickly give help or continue racing? As I was at the apex of the next corner in a slow pace, I saw someone running towards Lynda, and the opponents are closing in. So I accelerated and continue with the race. Then the red flag was raised at the start/finish line. I kept thinking about this after the race, and even when I was working today too. I have the feeling of regret that I did not stop and help Lynda. But the main question, should I have stop and help her, or when I am in a race, I should step on it as soon as I pass the accident location?

Here's what I would've done.

- Raised my hand to indicate I'm slowing and point towards the danger.
- Keep moving, I don't want to be rammed.
- It's a corner, so, I think generally speed wise it would be slow.

This isn't our profession and we're doing this for fun, so if the rest would speed pass me while I've slowed to indicate an accident, I'd do it. But no, i will not stop to help, we're s'pose to stay inside our karts for our own safety.

"Stop to help or not stop to help, that is the question"

If a professional driver that carries millions of $$$ of sponsorship, stopping for help is useless. Imagine Ralf crash out and Micheal stop to help, what cost of action that Ferrari, Shell, Marlboro and etc will take onto him?

But in my-kart, no business of such going on, just purely friendly race. However stopping for help will not do any good for safty sake, that makes another stagnant kart on track that counts.

Should incident as it is, leave it to the ground crew to deal with it, remember as a driver, you have another responsibility that is to avoid another incident happen. Take order from the race admin on the flagging system.

As per my reply in an earlier thread, I WOULD STOP but in a SAFE LOCATION AFTER THE ACCIDENT LOCATION...OFF the racing line, as close as possible to tyre wall.

The kart track is about 8m wide at the minimum, so I think we wun jam anybody.

The reason is we dun have any marshals to help or even wave flags! Since CK are not well trained, I trust my mYKart boys/girls more than any one else!

If you are not medically competed - at least do your bit to slow the karts coming towards to the incident area!!! That would prevent PILEUPS!

Again, all the above advice are my own, relevant for a FUN KART event like ours.

One point I'd like to add though - if you were to stop please be sure you know how to stop your kart engine.

about the yellow flags, should we make our own and position volunteers to be at certain location? or we can talk with CK and see how this can be improved?

Could St John's or any other institution provide training for basic first aid? Maybe this can be organised under Kelab MyKart Selangor?

I reckon that eventhough they gave us training, we are not capable of giving any treatments to an injured driver. Maybe those little cut, we can handle but like that flipped the other day, sorry mate. We need to take exams that are certified by St.John Malaysia in order to do so..

If my-karters are willing there is nothing preventing having say ~3 guys with yellow flags at various points at the far ends of the track during races.. and then they can run over for their race once the race has finished. Or perhaps it's better to make it 3 groups of 2 so that everyone has a chatting-buddy and if there's an accident that needs help the yellow flag is still there while the other guy runs out. The "stadium" section of the track could have a yellow flag as well and there are lots of people there.

imo stopping if you already see someone else going to the accident scene would not be smart and is more likely to cause more problems than anything.

adding to mikko's comments on stopping - if it was a simple clash and tangle accident, I wun stop but again, my comments on stopping is based on this scenario.....someone trapped under the kart and NO ONE IN SIGHT to help the poor driver!!!

Yeah that's what I meant - drivers that aren't racing in say K3 can be marshals during the K3 race. That's how club-level racing is done in many places.

IMHO, racers should not stop at accidents. We should have ground crews available. More volunteers please. Most of the time we are stationed at the start/finish line (it took me 10 secs to get to the accident scene). We also have ppl at the corner infront of the "grand stand". But most of the ppl there are spectators and mechanics. Need to have a proper responsibility there (yellow/green/red flags).

But since this is a club/friendly race, if accidents happen on the far side of the circuit, I think we should stop our karts safely, turn off the engine, and lend a helping hand (at least get the karts off the driver, if the case may be), put out a fire or whatever. Races can always be restarted, grid positions can also be rearranged. Help your fellow karters (if you know how).

A very good topic...

IMHO we should first ask ourself : "do I know anything about 1st aid?", "what can I do?" , "how can I help" and if the answer is you know nothing about 1st aid and can do nothing to help, then stopping is actually trying to cause more trouble as it creates more risks!!

But if you do have some experience, knowledge in 1st aid treatment, on a friendly race like this, well...you can try to pull aside and give a helping hand if you insist. But still...it is not a very good move TBH!
