DRAFT: DRIVERS K1 Rules & Regulations
1.0 OBJECTIVES
The my-KART events aim to popularise grassroots motorsports, particularly karting by making participation in regular karting events accessible and affordable for its members. my-KART realises that there are a significant number of casual and semi-serious karting enthusiasts who would like to have the opportunity to participate in affordable racing events. In doing so, my-KART emphasises safety and fun above all. my-KART also aims at developing the amateur karting community, and thus the group and events will be conducted in a friendly atmosphere.
The K1 series aims to provide the opportunity for my-KART members to get one step closer to competitive kart racing. There will be 125 cc CRG/PRD karts dedicated to the club for this series. As such, participation in this series will be selective and limited to ensure only drivers with the right skill level, experience and behaviour are included at this level.
The purpose of this document is to set out the event formats and rules which meet the above objectives.
1.1 DRIVER AND KART ALLOCATION
The K1 series will be limited to a maximum of 20 drivers. There will be 2 drivers assigned to one kart for the duration of the season.
Driver allocation to karts will be based on the closest physical fit between the 2 drivers, based on weight and height.
1.2 WEIGHT/BALLAST
The minimum weight for driver and kart shall be 165 kg at all times. Should the combined weight of driver and kart fall below this minimum threshold, ballasts shall be added to meet the minimum weight.
1.3 TRANSPONDER
Transponders are not required. The driver may if he so wish, rent the transponder from City Karting at his own cost and be solely responsible for any damages or losses to it due to any incident(s) whatsoever.
2.0 OVERVIEW OF RACE
Typically, the race is split into two segments for each driver and category:
(i) 2 qualifying heats - Heat 1 starting grid will be based on current my-kart race seedings. Heat 2 starting grid will be based on the reverse order of Heat 1's starting grid. Points will be awarded and accumulated from Heats 1 and 2.
(ii) 1 final - points will score towards the league table. Each driver will participate in one final each, but their groupings will be dependent on the total points accumulated from the 2 qualifying heats.
(iii) In the case where two drivers sharing the same kart, end up in the same final group, then the driver with the higher total points will take the assigned kart. The driver with the lower total points, will need to select another available kart.
3.0 RACE LENGTH
Each heat and final will run for about 10 minutes each. This equates to approx 8 laps.
4.0 DRIVER CATEGORIES AND EVENT GROUPINGS
There will be no driver categories within K1 (ie, no K1/45, K1/70).
5.0 QUALIFYING RACE FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY
(i) For the 1st qualifying races, karts and drivers will be assigned to each grid position based on current my-kart seedings.
(ii) For the 2nd qualifying races, karts and drivers will be assigned to each grid position based on the reverse order of Heat 1's starting grid.
(iii) change of karts: There will not be any kart changes in the K1 series. Karts that are damaged or need repairs, will be pulled out of the event and fixed. There is no guarantee that the the damaged kart will be ready for the next race.
6.0 FINAL FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY
Each driver will drive in only one final, although there may be more than one final. The most number of points scored over the 2 qualifying heats will determine which final the driver falls into.
If two drivers who share the same kart, fall into the same final grouping, then the driver with the higher number of points in qualifying will use the assigned kart. The second driver will need to select another available kart for the final race.
The starting order for the finals will be in order of the total points scored, with the highest score at pole position.
A driver who DNFs (must return to pits on own power) will not score points even if they are in the top final runners. The next drivers in the lower final groups will benefit from the extra position gained from the DNF driver's demise.
Points table:
Position.....Score

2.............16
3.............14
4.............12

9..............7
10.............6
11.............5
12.............4
13.............3
14.............2
15.............1
dns............0
dnq............0
dnf............0
There are 15 points scoring positions for the league table. Only the top 15 drivers in the finals share score points.
In the championship table, only the best 8 out of 10 scores will count towards the final drivers' championship. Drivers who score in 9 or 10 events will thus have to drop the lowests scores from the overall total.

8.0 FEE & PRICING
The pricing for the K1 series will be set by the organisers and is subject to change due to market forces and with minimal notice. Currently the fees for the series are as follows
- Security Deposit = RM600 per driver payable in full prior to each race, and must be maintained at RM600 throughout the season. Any costs arising from loss or damage to karts will be deducted from this deposit amount
- Event fee = RM190 per driver per event
Fees are paid in full upon registration. Only cash is accepted. The fees will not be refunded if the driver does not complete the full event.

Azlan,
Excellent draft bro; I have in parallel draft something and have attached it immediately after yours. Some items are similar while the rest are not. I propose that you read it and incorporate whatever is appropriate into your draft. The new ones can stay where they are and called " K1 Supplementary Regulations 2008" to ensure that everyone is fully informed about other matters. However, some of the strict rules, ex. compliance to CIK approved helmets and race suits can be retained but my-kart can relax compliance to this rule during drivers briefing.
Folks,
Please look at specifically Race format, qualifying for the 2 haets and finals. There is a difference between Azlan's and Naza's draft. My proposal is:
1. 5 mins timed practice
2. Heat 1 starting grid based on driver's best lap time from the timed practice.
3. Heat 2 starting grid based on Heat 1 finish position, not on quickest lap time.
4. Final starting grid based on points collected from Heats 1 and 2, jsut like in K2 and K3 except that there is no kart balloting.

»TheFazz:
azlan, naza - thanks for the excellent initiative here.
a few points:
1/ we may want to split the rules between the technical rules and the event rules
2/ on the point on the heats and qualifying - agree that we need to have some discussion on this.....
naza's option is similar to our K2 and K3 format in the sense that drivers collection points in qualifying as opposed to purely on fastest lap. so the heats 1 and 2 are both races, and not fast lap shootouts.
azlan's option is closer to competition rules where heats 1 and 2 are used as qualifying shoot outs (fastest laps rule).
- Login or register to post comments
»TheFazz:
also allow me to lay out the differences between the two options....
plusses are denoted with (+) and minusses (-)...
naza option:
(+) heats 1 and 2 are races - straight into action
(+) track condition independent
(-) requires additional 5min sortie to determine heat 1 grid
(-) not quite "purist" approach to racing... still very my-kart-ish
azlan option:
(+) very competition like - heats 1 and 2 are fast lap shoot outs
(+) grid sort not necessary for heat 1 and 2: you need only to post a fast lap... so no need for karts to bunch up
(-) track / tyre conditions play a big role in the lap times - not quite parity given we basically dictate who goes out when (the f1 drivers actually choose when to go out themselves, not being predestined)
i would like to maintain naza's approach, but without the additional 5min sortie.

»luen:
Personally i would prefer Azlan's approach of 2 heats shootouts. Reason being that
1. it has the closer format to real competition's and that would make K1 class different
2. much simpler in administration
3. sufficient time for drivers adapt to the karts

»saa73:
Some further differences between Azlan & Naza approaches:
Azlan's:
- requires transponders - may be additional $$ involved...about RM5 extra per driver?
- dependent on timing system working all the time, and obviously if we venture out of CK in the future, need to ensure all tracks have timing beams
- The 2 qualifying provides an element of "improving oneself", ie you'll be trying to beat your personal best each time. The finals is when we actually race -> closer to F1 format.
- Track conditions impacts qualifying results
Naza's:
- Does not require transponders/timing systems
- Requires lapchart takers per current practice
- Pure racing - no "personal best" to beat..
- Track conditions does not impact qualifying results.
It's really two different approaches and we may want to quickly post the options to the K1 participants now to get their views.

»naza:
Correction Azlan, Naza's approach will require transponders to record the fastest lap time during the 5 min Timed Practice.

»saa73:
Folks,
So have we decided on the format?
What about Fazz's suggestion, which is:
2 x Qualifying Heats -> results based on position
1 x Finals -> Grid position determined by Qualifying results, with higher scorer in front (ie not reverse grid)
This is basically the same as current practice, but not applying reverse grid.
It also looks like we don't need transponders. However, if we adopt the above and apply the 5 mins timed session to determine Heat 1 grid position, then we would need transponders.
Alternatively, how about the following:
Heat 1 - Timed trial (with transponders) ->results based on fastest lap
Heat 2 - Qualifying race - Grid position based on result of Heat 2 -> And Qualifying points assigned based on position of this race
FInals - Grid position determined by combined results heat 1 & heat 2 -> highest score at pole, etc..
This looks like a compromise, and provides the driver with 1 timed trial, and two races...basically provides a variety of ways to test driver skills in K1..

»TheFazz:
azlan - personally, i'd go with a variation of the my-kart format whereby heats 1 & 2 are races to determine starting order for the finals.
it is not comparable to "proper" competition formats (ie qualifying based on time), but i believe necessary as we do not allow 20 drivers to chose when they wish to go for a qualifying run... and we do not have all 20 drivers in a single group.

»naza:
...so without the 5min timed practice, what will the starting grid be based on for heat 1?...random perhaps?
- Login or register to post comments
»TheFazz:
like what we use now for K2 and K3. seeding.
- Login or register to post comments
»saa73:
can also...we just use the current seeding from K2 to sort the first race. The K3 folks will not be promoted to K1 until race 3 anyway, with the exception of Zul, who would have to be bottom seeded.
Let's finalise it then...Naza's approach without the 5 mins timed heats. Hence no transponders required?

Folks some update from talks with AP
1. Preparation for 4 more karts in full swing after Kok Seng's marriage this weekened.
2. Intends to prepare 2 karts for walk in practice and 2 more karts as spare. Total = 10 + 2 + 2 = 14 karts.
3. Drivers may practice with their assigned karts if they wish. However, these karts will not be available to drivers 24 hours before my-kart's raceday to allow time for maintenance.

»saa73:
Excellent! - That means we need to set aside some testing time next weekday then...can you push them to do it asap, eg by WEds latest?
14 karts a bonus...but 14 not good number lah..he should give us 15 karts! .. just kidding!
I was going to request item (3), but good that we got it already! This is the other benefit of being in K1 - mimics as close as possible, "ownership" of a high performance kart.
Administratively, we need to ask CK to keep a separate log of K1 members who utilise the karts for chicken wing practice. WE need to ensure that each kart's chassis no is matched to the member's card ID, and CK keep track of which member checks out the kart, to ensure transparency and to also know who's been heavily using the karts outside the event, in case the other guy complains it's been damaged, wrong setting, etc...
Overall it's looking gooooodz! ... can we publish the K1 rules/regulations/format by this Fri?

»naza:
Bro,
In fact, he was hoping that the K1 drivers do lots of practice sessions on their assigned karts cos its income to him. However, one must accept that wear and tear will be more rapid with more track time.
I will monitor whether the testing can happen next wednesday afternoon.
We really must publish the K1 regs but can everyone now rest with the present status on the issues we discussed above? I am ok with it.

Auntie,
I took the liberty of "kung fuing" the text above and therefore have updated it. Please proof read and focus on the amended text especially on qualifying and format sections which we all have debated quite extensively.
.....Publish it tonight if everyone is ok with it.

Boss Naza,
helmets certified by SIRIM and DOT will have stickers on. Those are certified road safety regulations for motorcycle test crash standard over 100km/h
SIRIM of Malaysia, DOT of USA and any other equivalent standards. SA0x stardards survive crash test, fireproof and roll cage crash test, that will be much more expensive than SIRIM, DOT or equivalent
haiyah in short ada sticker cukup la.
