My first K1 race experience!

Phew! What a day it has been. The K1 series got off to a brilliant start! Kudos to everyone who's been involved in setting this up and to get it running so smooothly today.

So how did the final results compare to my predictions? Well, I was anticipating lots of boos and jeers on track today from my predictions..and, pretty much got it! However, I started off with a great qualifying heats and scored a great win in Heat 1 - so there!! Sticking out tongue

Heat 2 was not so great as I started last, but due to some incidents in the 2nd turn, I was able to make up some ground and qualify ahead of my arch rival the Beruk Merah..err, I mean Muhaymin, and qualified 3rd place overall.

Since both Beruk Merah and myself qualified in the same Final (A), our kart was open for selection in Final B, and another red person, or rather crustacean, ie Mr Lobster, opted to choose the kart.

After Final B, Mr Lobster kindly reported back some mechanical problems in our kart which I then asked the mechanics to fix. Unfortunately, mechanic Mr Dok was nowhere to be seen and I lost about 10 mins before he came back, and by that time, the Final A was about to start...and Dok told me it would take 15 mins to fix.

Hence I went out in Final A with a little handicap which I tried to overcome by changing my driving style, etc, but to no avail and I ended up falling 5 places to 8th position.

However Final A was awesome from my perspective - I was the last in a pack of 4 with Zul, Amirul, Luen and myself...and Yus was right behind me..so pardon me, it was a pack of 5!

The dog fight was intense and my adrenaline is still pumping right now from that experience! Zul was being hassled left right and centre by both Amirul and Luen, and at one point nearly gave in!

I even caught Luen offguard at the sweeping right hander...bro, I thought you had eyes at the back of your head - you were genuinely shocked to see me! hehehe

However Luen caught me back at the straight due to my mechanical problem, which slows me down coming out of corners - clutch problems I think.

Funny thing happened at the chequered flag - I didn't know what came over me, but I honestly thought Luen was slowing down, and thought I could pip him to the post...which I did not do, and then since I was going really fast into the corner, slammed on the brakes and stalled my kart in front of a laughing crowd!...well, just Bombe and Wei Li laughing at me!..sheesh..

Anyway, it was a great day, great fun, excellent team work from all my-KARTers and great racing!

Can't wait for the next event in Feb...Counter Clockwise wooohoo!

Azlan,

We need to report to CK which karts needs attention in preparation for the next race while it is still fresh in our minds. We will assume that everyone is happy unless you tell us what was not right, example the mechanical problem you had experienced.

....Anyway, glad that you enjoyed the battles.....a taste of what it is in actual pro races.

Thanks Naza.

My Kart #9 had something broken in the clutch that would have taken 15 mins to fix. I may go out on Eagle Wings with Muhaymin before Round 2 to get this fixed.

As far as I know there was one kart with damage- Kart #7 damage caused by Ashraff - he'll need to pay up the cost of damages before Round 2.

I saw another kart with radiator problems - leaking badly...forgot whose it was though..

May I remind all K1 drivers that you need to be concern with the problems you had encountered with your assigned karts in preparation for round 2. It would be a good idea to test / practice on your assigned kart latest on the Thursday before the Saturday race. Friday is reserved for CK to do last minute maintenance, etc.

Practice sessions for the CRG karts is RM 90.00 per 10 minute session or RM 400.00 for a 5 session voucher.

Please do not practice on karts other than the one assigned to you or face world war 3.

Naza - we need to give CK the list of CRG karts matched to the K1 member, for control purposes.

Well done everyone Thumbs up My debut was fantastic today..Enjoyed every bit of it today..Feels totally professional in this league..Battlewise,at Heat 1 Mumu was pressuring me at the very end..I manage to create a good gap till focus(my force)was interfered by the dark side..Hence,the tyre wear due to the heat and pressure..Heat 2 was the most intensifying lot,Obi Wan Kenobi(go find out who..eheh)was at my tail all the time..This is a good example of a buaya waiting for its meal and GNAP!!he left me with a stressful gap..Then comes, the point minimization just because one of my ballast came off..Pfft,i know theres 6 ballast, how the heck i know the stuck up one under my seat..its a bit dissappointing to hear cos from point of view its a mechanical(human) default..not the driver..No doubt we were advised to check the karts..what a bummer.
ALhamdullilah my Kart#3 performs like a baby..And thank god that shall be mine for 2 more rounds..ahhahhaaha!!!Its mine all mine...I,m very happy, looking forward to anticlockwise. Cool Finally i wanna thank my sponsors today CRG,TOYOTA VISTA TECNO RACING TEAM and DUREX for giving me a good start of the race. Eye

First of all, I would like to congrat to LeMizi aka Les Francais driver cum South Africa driver. Also to chooz as i nominated him as the "man of of the race" as he outbraked mumu and myself in k1 champagne after the long straight near the ROK official START/FINISH line. Pretty impressed with him I'd must say.

I didnt expect him to overtook me at that turn. Maybe because I was just played it safe to nurse the kart back home and gave him too much room to overtake. Good clean lines from this 2 drivers although I had slight nudge from mumu in last 2 laps.

My best finish ever in k1 and finished 3rd. Never even had a good competitive result in k2 last year, not even in podium finish (only had best 5th place spot finish last year). My only last race win was in mid 2006 which was in k3. Yikes! Im just way lack from podium finish whereas
podium finish.

Pretty happy with the finish although im only looking forward to win in the next round. Of course, need to improve more on nursing the tire and driving next time.

Isk: Pity with you with the DQ results although that wasnt your fault. Wish to race with you again with your touring style driving.

Des: My favourite driver to race with. You just had your bad day. Hopefully we'll race each other again this round. Did you had your proper underwear on you just now? What happened on the incident with ashraff earlier on?

Everything was great today except for the heat. Something must be done to improve the turnaround time especially in driver ballast system.

Finally to my CRG kart teammate, Zul and yeah thanks for the final setup tips which worked out to both of us in 2nd qualifying.

At first during the qualifying run 1, I kinda ease off during the start to avoid any contact... thinking bout the deposit lol.. but then it soon gets out my mind and I paced behind Naza until he spunned out. Last lap saw Fazz also spunned and moved me up another spot to 4th. Tyres were losing grip.

2nd qualifying getting better. 4 of us managed to break away in front (Ramsey, Amirul, Mark & me) to the pack left behind trying to avoid the flying ballast.. haha... Slowly managed to pass Mark then following closely Amirul.. all the way till the last lap he lost grip and took the outer line while I managed to stay inside and took 2nd.

Final race A started off well. Also 4 karts pulled out in front to the rest of the field (Tarmizi, Ramsey, Mumu & me) after couple of hard fought battling laps. Following Mumu closely behind, looking for overtaking chances. Tried a couple of maneuvers but Mumu defended well. 3 laps remaining and I tried to outbreak again and this time success! Next up was Ramsey, slowly eating him up as he was losing grip... up until the penultimate lap, outbreaked him in the back straights... to a 2nd placing finish for first race. Nice...

It was an excellent race! I love it! My kart #7 performs like a charm! hehe..

I too wanna thank my sponsors CRG, my team and mates in TOYOTA VISTA TECNO RACING TEAM and not forgeting My-kart for bringing this wonderful series to us... woohoooo!

today was the first time i drove the CRG/JYM/rotax junior: it was a scary experience.

i am a driver who likes to have a solid stopping power given my style of late and hard braking. with the hard compound JYMs and perhaps a bit of a worn brakes, i found that i could not get enough comfort under braking.

i probably missed all my apexes, and was sliding around on entry into the corners.

my first race was a bit of a mixed bag. i started from 4th on the grid, and moved to 3rd behind Isk and mumu. Mumu was pressing Isk for the first half of the race, and when Isk started sliding wide, Mumu pounced. I managed to take advantage of Isk approaching the 1st hairpin, and aimed for the apex with my kart. After passing Isk i set about chasing Mumu, but my tyres were starting to lose grip. I was basically all over the place and made a small mistake on the last lap entering the esses that caused me to spin and drop all the way down to 8th at the end.

i later found out that my left rear tyre was under inflated at around 0.6bar... which Shaeran corrected before his run.

on my second qualifying, i started 7th on the grid. again, i had a fairly good start and moved up to 4th and chasing Mark. However, i started to get a little worn out from the concentration and chasing in order to close the gap... and started losing places.

with my inability to handle low grip and low brakes, i started to move backwards. I realised that i was holding back a number of drivers behind me who were all queuing up to pass me. a few of them bumped me into the corners nearly pitching me into spins. I started losing places, first to chooz, and then Naza. again on the last lap, the weariness took its toll on me, as des managed to squeeze past me at the second hairpin to finish just ahead of me in 6th.

the final was nothing much for me as i did not get past the start line as the kart i was driving (ramsey's #8), had drive problems. i lost power on the formation lap after the first hairpin, and could not start again. i watched helplessly and enviously as the others kept passing me and my stationary kart lap after lap.

overall, not quite a good K1 debut for me. made mistakes, and had a tough time adapting to the kart.

I had an nice day racing too despite all the unfortunate things that had happend to me.

Race 1 Group A.

Kart was good. i was so confident. started 3rd on grid. Green flag off ! !
first corner, got a good racing line and setting myself up to take the inside line of Isk on second turn. and then suddenly i felt a nudge right behind me that set my kart spininng and facing counterclockwise.. Sad it was asraff. Both of us were stuck with each other. and trying to get the engine to restart again. and by the time we got it untangled, the pack was too far for me to chase..
Lost a good chance to gain points for qualifying.

Race 2 Group A
Started 8th on grid. This time, we all had a clean start managed to gain 2 positions and tucked behind fazz. this time , the race was very competitive.. Behind me was naza waiting to pounce on my mistake whilst iam waitting to pounce on Fazz's early braking. i tempted a few late braking to overtake fazz. only to find myseld running wide and fazz managed to get back his position. whats worst, Naza even slipped in. so now iam behind of Naza and MuMu was waitting for the oppurtunity to pounce at me. After a few laps, Naza managed to overtake Fazz, and now its my turn again to pounce at Fazz.
I can see Fazz is struggling in corners. and braking very very early. It was quite difficutl for me to pass fazz without risking going wide and losing the position. so i was planning for about 2 laps. before i decided to take the inside line to overtake fazz at the last corner and at the last lap. It was quite a bold move becase there were so little room for error.
so overall managed to climb only 2 positions.

Ended up Final B ( Coca Cola Cup)

Started 5th On grid. manage to climb one position and very close to Shaeran. Kart was good . grip was awesome. Got a little greedy and took the inside line of Shaeran only to find out that sharen managed to close the gap. i have no choice but to apply brakes into the corner to avoid collission that send me spining !!! yes spun again ! Sad ..
regain back and managed to chase Wei li again . and finished a weak 15th
What a day !!!

I would like to thank my sponsor " Brunei Air Checked Bagagge" and Phuket shooting range " !!

Ramsey : Dont worry bro ! 9 more rounds to go.. and iam sure we will meet in Final A as soon as the next round !!!!

First and foremost thank you very much to all the organisers of my-kart for putting together such a fantastic start to the season running 3 series, K1, K2 and K3. The effort and selfless dedication of the committee deserves a huge round of applause Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

I was really looking forward to taking part in the K1 race, especially since my performance in the K2 series last season was pathetic! Finally I cannot blame the kart anymore!

Race 1, Group A
I started at the back of the grid and had a fantastic start and passed Amirul on the inside line on the first corner when disaster struck at the next corner! Ashraff and Desmond were in a tangle and I passed on their right hand side and was nudged by one of them and ended up in the gravel. I recovered quickly and tried to catch the pack ahead of me, which was proving very difficult on a level playing field (similar driver weights, similar performance and setup etc). Des and Ashraff were hot on my tail as I sat in 8th place. Then a happy (for me) moment came when I passed Naza who was recovering from a spin which put me up to 7th place. No way was I going to let my mentor Naza pass me and I pushed even harder with the newly found incentive! Next was the moment of glory (for me) as I powered passed Fazz who had just gone into a spin in the chicane. Overall having started from the back of the grid and finishing in 6th place was a small personal victory for me!

Race 2, Group A
Now was my opportunity for sweet victory starting at the front of the grid… Ramsey was powering away and took the lead and Amirul and I were battling away together until the battle heated up on the home run apex and I spent too much time watching my tyre position against Amirul’s tyres on my right hand side not realising I was drifting off the track on the left… after a few metres of grass cutting Amirul took second position I regained my composure and pushed on, but with a keen Danny Chooz pressuring me hard… the smooth dude he is, slipped past me and shamed me into fourth place which I just maintained until the end of race **actually, I was rather hoping Danny and Amirul would have a small incident and give me the opportunity I needed**!

Final, Group B
Consistency here… last season I never even sniffed a group A final and true to tradition I failed again to make it into the Group A final today.
My kart-share partner Izrul (Bombe) was also in Group B so I opted to allow Izrul to continue in our kart (no. 10) which was more specifically tailored for him. To the utter dismay of Azlan I selected to use his kart for my race… poor guy, I can still see the tears in his eyes from that decision…
BUT, once we went on our formation lap I realised Azlan had given me a tractor and not a kart! The clutch on the rotax junior engine contains 3 clutch springs within the clutch housing and this particular kart only had 2 working springs, and 1 exploded spring. When in use this causes a sticky effect rather similar to the feeling of fuel starvation or spark plug problems. As such, I had to do a lot of late braking to keep the rpm high but the tyres were not evenly matched to the power thus causing a lot of drifting, missing the apex and most notably overheated tyres which meant however hard I tried I was not gaining any closure in the gap between Shaeran in 3rd place and myself in fouth place. Overall a rather disappointing personal result and hopefully one I can improve upon in the coming 9 rounds!

Well done to everyone in who took part and I look forward to may more of these battles to come!

Thanks for the great write up Mark! And for the explanation of the clutch problem with my kart and letting me know about it after the race.
See - this problem lead to my 8th place finish instead of 1st! Cool

Being totally out of practice and also short on karting fitness, I had only 2 aims for the race :

1. Finish the race; and
2. Don't get lapped!

Happy to have achieved both. I was struggling with the power of the kart and also the hard compound tires. The braking points were really early, even earlier than my previous 125cc kart on outdated tyres. I went into every corner too fast and I also had problems getting the right sensitivity with the throttle.

Well, let's see if I improve in round 2 and beyond. I don't mind collecting back the depost coz the RM600 = 6 days of wakeboarding for me!
