Reflections on Driver Round 4 - My K1 race

The last time I sat in the 125cc CRG Kart 9, was 2 Feb 2008. I remember we had clutch problems that was eventually fixed during the long lull period until today!
The K1 Round 4 race promised to be an exciting one, mainly due to the return of some old faces, and some new ones too since a couple of regulars could not make it this time.

New to K1 was Raymond Phillips aka Ray Rossi - he took the opportunity to take over Bombe's seat for this round.
Some of our old friends that made a return to my-KART include Jason Loo, a Mini kaki and also 125cc kart owner who's a firm believer in practice, practice, practice - this fella is legendary..has been known to do >50 laps on the 125 in a single afternoon!...wah liao eh!.
The other old kaki, and most threatening one to all of us in K1, was Hafidz Fahro Rozi. I could hear a collective "groan" and "oh no, it's him!" when he turned up this morning hehehe...

Anyway, K1 leads Naza and Luen conducted the ballot after the registration and weigh in process, which resulted in my allocation to Group B, which as luck would have it, meant that I was in the same group and Jason and Hafidz! Oh no!....Shocked

Qualifying Round 1
This was a tough fight for me all the way to the chequered flag! Exhausting or what!. I had a fairly decent start and must have ended up at 3rd position, with Tarmizi and Naza up front and extending their lead. Didn't realise I had both Hafidz and Faiz Annuar on my tail, and it didn't take long for them to overtake me - which meant I had a great view of the dogfights that occured between the two.

This pack of 3 fought hard all the way, with Hafidz and Faiz closer to each other, and I acting like some kind of referee at the back. Then, I think a lap or 2 from the finish, Faiz must have gotten desperate and decided to "main belakang" Hafidz just before the last corner to the start/finish line, they ran wide, and, sensing a great opportunity, I ran towards the inside line to take both of them out.

Sadly, Hafidz was savvy enough to figure out my intention and zoomed ahead of me, leaving a gap between him and Faiz, whom by now lost momentum due to all that belakang play..so I slipped in and claimed my 4th position from him! heheh...nice race but it was really, really tiring for a 1st race!
Also, based on Mumu's advice on the brakes, I was very cautious and braking earlier than usual at the corners.

Qualifying Round 2
A relatively sedate round for me. And I mean relative...there were some dramas that must have occured just behind me during the first 2 laps, with the spinning of Iskander's kart causing damage to both his and Naza's.
Anyway, I didn't know how that happened until the following lap, when I saw one CRG lying on the corner of turn 1!

After the dust settled, the top 2 karts were way in front, Jason Loo was 3rd, and I was running 4th. I was running pretty close up Jason's rear (no, I'm not that way inclined!), and followed him up close and personal for about 5 laps.

I think Jason made a mistake turning into the long back straight, where I then took over 3rd position and maintained it for 2 laps to the chequered flag.

Final A
Yes! I made it to Final A, after coming in 4th and 3rd in the Qualifying Rounds. Unfortunately, Mumu scored more qualifying points, hence was in the same Finals and got to keep Kart 9, and leaving me to choose Kart #3, which was previously used my IskM7.

After flagging off K2 A Finals, I rushed back to the kart to undo all the 5 ballasts that were attached to the seat for Isk! Thanks to Isk for helping out, and no thanks to Mumu for lying on the hammock and singing "Widuri" while I was sweating away trying to get these weights off! Sticking out tongue But sweet revenge came later on track!

Starting 4th on the right, I had a pretty decent start again and ended up in the middle of the pack turning into Turn 1. I knew Tarmizi started behind me, and must have ended up just behind me once we settled into packs.
My memory of this race was mainly of being bumped like nobody's business from behind from these people - Tarmizi, Dassmond and a few times by Fazz! I think Tarmizi made a genuine error early in the race. However, I was overtaken by Fazz and Mumu, and I guess since Desmond was behind me, there was a pack of 4 of us fighting though the mid laps.
Dassmond cucuked me at some point in the race, just before the start/finish line, in his quest to overtake me, which he did....and he then went on to kacau Mumu & Fazz!

Later in the race, I was in a pack of 3 with Fazz & Mumu, and after some intense dog fighting, I took BOTH of them out hahaha! (Can't remember where...Fazz/Mumu, care to jog my memory?)
However, this event brought home to me that I have not actually raced side by side with Fazz....for YEARS! You see, in K2, he would usually be at least half a lap in front of me for most races, leaving me playing with the heavy boys at the back! Now that our weights are equalised through ballasts, I find myself dog fighting with the lighter folks like him...which was very interesting!

So, one thing you need to know about El Presidente, is that he is very determined! As we were heading into Turn 1 during the last lap, I didn't realise he was hot on my tail. I took a slightly wider line to turn into Turn 1, but as I turned right, there he was, trying to catch me from the inside! I was momentarily startled and I guess our experience and common sense saved us from major incident, but there was still a slight bump which couldn't have been good for Fazz. I think he went a lap down, but not sure if it was because of that incident.

Anyway, I ended up in 5th place overall, ahead of Fazz and Mumu, which was my sweet revenge on him for singing chinese songs while I was toiling on the kart! Sticking out tongue

Overall, excellent racing folks - I enjoyed every minute of it!

great recollection of the race bro.

Laughing out loud Laughing out loud

it was one of my best races in a long while.

i had a bit of a desperate day in round 4. my first qualifying was pretty good, as i managed to get into 3rd early on and was chasing ramsey for many laps. i noted that ramsey was a little early on the brakes but i couldn't close enough to pass him, as i could not exit the corners fast enough. in one of the laps i decided to take a big bite of ramsey at the first hairpin and i jammed on my brakes and planted my kart on the apex of the first hairpin and took ramsey by surprise.

but once i did that, i did not really pull away as i found that a whole bunch of other guys were tailing my very closely. i think it was desmond, mumu, ramsey and i am not sure who else. luckily for me i maintained composure all the way to the flag despite many close attentions from desmond. 2nd behind the flying chooz was a good result.

the second qualifying was a mixed one for me. starting 6th i made the perfect start in K1 by getting into first within the first lap. but unfortunate for me i had mumu climbing all over my rear end, that horny bastard. i was under intense pressure, and missed my braking points a few times - which allowed mumu to slip by. but as i tried to defend the corner i booted too much power and spun. desmond spun with me. sorry for that. i ended up in 7th.

the final was great fun as well. starting 8th on the grid, i made another good start and got into 6th at the end of lap one. by then huffiz was already running away with the race which he was to win later. i saw faiz annuar following him and then chooz and seys in pursuit. i was pursuing desmond to quickly get past. i managed to do that at the second hairpin by giving him just enough room on the exit of hairpin one but which gave me a better entry into two.

however, i soon had mumu pressuring me again. knowing that he was a horny bastard... i was getting scared. once again, the fella pressured me into braking too late on a number of corners... but i managed to get the position back. not known to me azlan was watching our dogfight behind. there were a few times that mumu and i touched around some of the corners. but once again it was the second hairpin that i managed to get past mumu - but at the cost of azlan slipping by easily. but as azlan led me into the left hander curve, i saw an opportunity that said "now or never" and i went into azlan's inside of the curve. again azlan and i touched as we raced through the curve. but azlan stayed ahead. i chased azlan all the way round the lap, and tried to catch him at the subsequent 1st hairpin, it was a close one, and i had a slight touch with azlan and spun. my race was over then as i took some time to restart my kart.

but all in all, it was one hell of a race. i must have burnt my brakes and tyres with all that hard racing and braking!

thanks to azlan, mumu, ramsey and desmond for giving me one of the best k1 dogfights for me. Thumbs up  Thumbs up

Just have to say, there was a lot of "main belakang" that went on yesterday. hmm...I know all the K1 members are very good friends, but let's not get THAT close!! Eye

This was certainly one of the most anticipated race since the postponement of round 3. And since I had the slight advantage of not carrying the extra 4kg ballast… doesn’t make a difference anyway. Hahaha. Here’s what I encountered.

Q1 A:
Started in pole position. Had a good clean getaway… and from then on, kept pulling away further and further from everyone else. The last two laps I maintained my pace and preserved the kart till the chequered flag. A great start victory for me indeed.

Q2 A:
Now, from a different perspective starting from the very back end of the field. Followed closely behind from start till the first hairpin. As usual, a few had some good bumps with each other. Unfortunate for Luen, he spun and lucky for me I managed to escape him. Still following closely behind the pack, until Fazz made his mistake and some others as well because of it... I slipped right thru up to third. Not long before taking second. Then determined to pursue Mumu up front, I picked up my pace. A few laps left till the flag, managed to have some good side by side moments but he defended well. Came the last lap, I was still looking for that one chance… and it was at the back straights. I said to myself, its now or never. So I went on the inside, tried the late braking but was caught out by the uneven braking force and made me spun. Ashraf and Ramsey cautiously zoomed passed me and I restarted back to take a forth place.

Final A:
Starting second up front next to pole was a good place. But as the green flag goes, I tried to power off but my kart was surging and had no power to pull me. So I got stucked a sec before I gained power but that caused me few positions to forth by turn 1. I followed closely behind Ramsey and was looking for opportunity to pass. And I managed it the next lap. Battle now goes on with Faiz on second spot. Had a couple of chances before the slight bump that I got passed him. Ramsey who was closely behind also went by Faiz then. Kept pushing harder after that but still had the fuel surge problems at the parabolic. Race leader, Hafidz was already far ahead by then as he was free from any of those dogfights. I managed to close up a lil to keep my position till the end. A good race with another 2nd placing finish.

Suddenly it feels like Hamilton in the start of last year’s season, no race wins yet but podium positions. Hahaha… watch out for my maiden race win the coming round!

It feels so great for me to be back after the long silence... feels "alive" again. although I'm still tired, bruised and exhausted until now. Wasn't expecting racing in 125cc would be this demanding. or it's just me not fit for racing at all. Anyway, it was a fantastic race experience, especially when it's my first ever 125cc race, plus an unexpected maiden victory!

Race 1 felt like the first time on gokarts. The moment I hit the track, I have to throttle off.. scary wei! Not used to the power. And I was struggling to adjust myself to the kart. Made many mistakes, clipped my bumper, and worse someone climb on top of me! I think it was Faiz. Sorry for being to slow on the corners man.. I was being too careful.

Race 2 started on pole. So there was a bit of unfair advantage as I pull away from the pack. Again with the Finals. It was a clean break. And I manage to pull away quite smoothly. Finally got back the momentum. Was a good race with a clean finish.
