2009 K2 Kart Series - Driver Feedback

As many are aware we have been looking at the possibility of introducing 'Exlusive Karts' for the K2 series in 2009. However, in order to achieve this the club has to consider various factors such as viability, commitment from drivers, cost implications etc.

The purpose of this thread is to seek drivers feedback (any drivers from any series) on the 3 possible scenarios as follows:-

1. New Exclusive K2 Karts (cost est approx RM200 per event, plus RM300 damages deposit and mandatory my-kart membership)

or

2. Existing K2 Karts (no deposit req'd, membership not mandatory)

or

3. Abolish K2 series and run K3 and K1 only.

Please be open and frank in expressing your opinions.

I will like the K2 to remain as it a step ahead for K3 drivers before going to K1.

i think that to abolish K2 would be a very bad idea as it may scare people that want to move up but not straight to K1 to get some dedicated karts for K2 i think is a very good idea because initially that was what put me off even wanting to go up, since i had had some experience with the K2 rental karts and how bad they were my view was that they were just too unreliable but my need to go faster has since out ranked that view and i cant wait to try out the K2

it wiil be better to run 1 and 2.

Given participants of choices to run exclusive and normal rental karts.

Keep the K2 series, it is a stepping stone into K1.

To pay a small higher fee to have a better "exclusive" kart to race is much more satisfying rather than grumbling about the poor state of the current K2 karts after the race, where you will get frustrated and the passion in K2 karting might be killed.

The bad condition of the current K2 karts is not a surprised, the karts are basically used for the daily rental and you should see how the karts are being thrashed in many of the inexperience hands.

I agree with Luen. Can we run 1 & 2 at the same time?

I'm all for the exclusive K2 kart idea to bring in some consistency and closer racing. Current K2 format is still great but tends to have a somewhat predictable final because you know which karts are the performers and which are the donkeys based on the qualifiers.

Best wishes

let me provide a bit more background to this dilemma.

we know that the current K2 karts are a bit dodgy. hence, the thought of establishing K2 exclusive (a la K1).

however, in order for the K2 exclusive to work we need to have sufficient confirmed participants: ~30 pax to ensure 20 per round. given the current smallish pool of K2 drivers today (and many desiring to move to K1), we may end up with a small number for K2 exclusive, and therefore rendering the series a non-starter. hence, the reason for this discussion thread - and the options listed above.

option 1 - may be possible if many of the current K2 remain in K2 exclusive, and sufficient K3 upgraders to K2 exclusive despite the higher cost

option 2 - if many K2 upgrades to K1, and insufficient K3 upgrades to K2 exclusive (due to cost), we will then need to maintain the current public rental karts for K2... but could result in depletion in participation numbers over the long term due to kart conditions... making option 3 inevitable

option 3 - if many K2 drivers wish upgrading to K1, and insufficient K3 drivers wish to upgrade to K2 exclusive / non-exclusive because of higher cost / poor karts, respectively... then we may need to abolish K2.

happy to read more comments, and thoughts here. please let's debate this thoroughly.

i dont mind remaining at K2 exclusive just to make the quota. anyway, all i want is close racing, not one here and the other one there..

Yea, I want consistent close racing too. Hate it when we get those crappy karts, nothing else to do but to go for a Sunday drive.

This should put the fun of close racing in K2 again.

Btw, exclusive K2 karts doesn't just you have a more equal kart but you get to learn to tweak the handling of the kart (eg..play around with tyre pressures).

»

RawFlesh:

RawFlesh's picture

Yea, agreed.... We'll learn more about the dynamics of our kart and how we can change settings to suit our driving style. Now, it's about trying to change our driving style to suit the kart(crappy or not).

I find it to be a bad idea to run both the exclusive-K2 and rental-K2 concurrently. These same-category splits will cannibalise each other and may dramatically reduce the number of participants for BOTH of the categories. So you’ll get neither here, nor there in terms of number of karts on the track.

I for one definitely think k2 is vital as a stepping stone.. and willing to pay a lil more... but proposed fee RM200??? the math just isnt feasible tho, to me it doesnt even add up..even the current prices makes me wonder...even tho its vital to have K2.. whats the point for having K2 if its more expensive than K1? just isnt logical.. currently K2 drivers are already paying the most per cc .. should nego with ck about their pricing structure....

Facts & Figures

K1 = RM190. Cost per cc = RM1.52
Current K2 = RM170 , difference to K1 in cc is 25cc. Cost per cc = RM1.70
K3 = RM90, difference in cc is 20cc when compared to K2. Cost per cc = RM1.125
Proposed K2 = RM200, cost per cc is a staggering RM2 Puzzled

We are already currently paying ck too much.. RM170 is already a super steep price for a machine that needs more medical attention than my grandma Sticking out tongue

The pricing for K2 should be in BETWEEN K1 and K3 whether its exclusive or not. If not, you might as well expand K1 and scrap K2 which ONLY costs RM20 extra per person which is still technically cheaper than 100cc... A more logical approach is to revise the price. A revised price of around RM1.20 - 1.30 per cc for the current K2 karts or RM1.4 - 1.45 per cc for exclusive would make more sense, it should never be more expensive or equal in costs to 125cc.. sorry just my opinion.. hope u guys can use these points to push for a better pricing structure for us! CheerS!

Faibs,

K1 fees for next year is higher than K2 exclusive.

...it is very unlikely (if not impossible) to run both K2 systems concurrently cos it is technically NOT EQUAL with regards to performance and price.
