Overtaking Ethics

Here is a very clear and simple description of overtaking code of ethics that we should abide with when racing karts: (thanks John!)

Overtaking - if you're trying to overtake, especially under braking, you need to get at least half or 3/4 of the way inside before it's a sensible move and you also need to make sure the driver in front can see you. A good example of how not to overtake was David Coulthard's move in the Euro GP on Sunday - he tried at the last moment and only got his nose alongside - the other driver didn't expect or see him so took the normal line and there was contact. You should also make sure that you can still make the corner safely - sometimes you've go a bit fast into the corner and slide a little bit wide but that's OK but if you try to overtake and can't make the corner at all without hitting the other driver, that's not safe.

When being followed, don't weave. You can (and should) defend your line so you can take an inside line into a corner (although you lose a bit of speed) but you shouldn't move from side to side. If a driver is along side you, don't turn into him - give him (or her) space. If you lose a place because of this, you've got the fun of trying to overtake again Smiling

The main thing to remember is that it's not F1 and you're trying to have fun with friends - crashing into each other isn't likely to help your friendship Smiling

Very clear and precise instructions. I would like to point out though, if the driver in the lead is aware that someone is determined to pass on the inside (against the advice given above), be prepared that they are likely to slide and cross your path, so prepare yourself to give way to avoid any unwanted incident.

F1 cars have rear view mirrors and the lead driver must be blind if he claimed that he was not aware of another driver behind him trying to make a pass. Karts however, dont have any and its therefore up to the lead driver to be prepared to give space at the last moment or risk contact.

As for me, I'd rather lose a position and fight to regain it than to make contact, get a DNF.....and the walk of shame photographed!

well the general rule of overtaking is if u would want to dive in to out-brake the person infront, do so at the straight, and not in the corners, you will T BONE the poor fellow, unless your outside tyres are made of rubber came from planet grip.

not sure whether to say this.. but.. Sticking out tongue

if you are the lead driver about to be passed, instead of blocking, allow your opponent to pass... but make sure u brake late and open up your racing line. your opponent will get the inside line, but he will also come out wide, while you come up tighter..

this is classic recovery maneuver.. we see it all the time in F1 Eye
