Round 01, K3 race report - Nazri Ng dominates on debut

Sunday, 8 January 2006
Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit (CW)

Rookie Nazri Ng had a perfect debut by winning both qualifying races and the K3 final in dominant style. Nazri beat Siew Weng who flew in from Melbourne the night before and Ramzul Zai in third. Azim Wahab, Danny Chooz and Chris Chuang make up the remaining top six finishers.

Qualifying honours went to Nazri with two wins followed by Danny and Ramzul with a win each. The K3 field mainly comprised many new faces with four lady drivers Marsella, Farhana, Norhafizah and Kam Hui Li. The biggest drama in K3 qualifying was when Zainuddin Zainal had a steering rod/nut failure at turn 1 and crashed into the tyre barriers. Luckily he was not injured and the kart was not significantly damaged. The wet track during the earlier sessions did catch out a few drivers as some slid wide in various corners and onto the dirt and grass.

Aside from Nazri and Danny, the first round Q1 qualifying runners up were Ramzul (group A) and Azim whilst (group B) third places went to Desmond Khoo (group A) and Ramsey Sabelt (group B). In Q2, the top 3s in addition to Ramzul and Nazri were Desmond (2nd) and Danny (3rd) in group A, and Azim (2nd) and Ramsey (3rd) in group B.

Nazri's full qualifying points gave allowed him first choice of karts for the final, and he chose kart #5. Nazri used this advantage to overcome the handicapped tenth place grid start. He quickly gained ground on the competition to win the first race of 2006. The final races progressed with minimal drama, and the sole one was when Ramsey Sabelt spun off into retirement and a DNF. Ramsey's DNF promoted the drivers in final B by one position.

Congrats to Nazri Ng! He did very well for qualifying & final.

Not an easy qualifying yesterday as the handling of the kart doesnt suit my style but did managed to keep up with the top flights of the first two qualifying. Both qualifying heat finished 3rd.

Final A- Battled for 3rd and 4th position with my ol-time karting buddy in lap 6, Azim Wahab, (1st time in CityKarting circuit, well done to him!) as i went wide off to grass after exiting bus stop corner (right before the high speed parabolica G-force turn) ended up disappointing DNF.

Wasn't a good start for me this season but I had fun because of the close action battle for 3rd, 4th and 5th position (Ramzul). Well done to all that have finished the race in the finals.

hehehe...sabelt bro...I saw your unfortunate incident...you were battling hard for 3rd position for a few laps before you went offtrack...& I thot i was the only one who went into the "sawah " yesterday when I lost my brakes totally Eye
in fact quite a few guys actually went off track yesterday...wooohoooo!!! I love my-kart!!!
better luck for you next time bro...

the first k3 group A heat was the first heat of the morning, so the track totally had no grip and i was just spinning everywhere. none the less had managed to just keep out of trouble.
2nd heat didnt improve, but had a great battle with Spencer i think, the guy in blue jumpers. kept changing positions, but hats off to him for crossing the line ahead of me. i realised my start to the 2nd heat was awful, which destroyed my race, hence i focused on the start for final.
start for my final race was perfect. 4th on the grid, heaps of torque in the engine rocketed my kart to 2nd pos. into 1st corner, up to P1 on the next left hairpin. happily leading the race into the backstraight, until screwing up at the exit of the hairpin, letting nazri overtaking me and running away with the lead to win. great way to start the year. who says u dont win on the first lap??? for me, the start is the most important aspect.

ahah! but in the end it's who crosses the finish line first. still great race from you to make up for the bad qualifying. could you have stayed ahead of nazri?

nnaahh... Nazri is just too fast!! he corners fasters, brakes later and drives more consistent. even without the little mishap, doubt i can hold him till the flag. my kart just understeered on exit, which is strange... the front tyres felt like it has a wee bit too much pressure. gotta improve my consistency!! looking forward to the next round already!!!

Very true about the start. I'm still kicking myself for not being aggresive despite starting on the front row in K2 Heat 2B. Did a post-mortem by looking back at the photos, I found I started my attack too late and I got caught up behind Azlan in the progress.

As I have mentioned earlier, I'll be there by hook or by crook to gather some points in Rd2 K2 and hopefully for the rest of the season.

Guys, guys! Remember the winner will be decided on the basis of your best 8 rounds. So, if you miss one, you have 9 rounds to go. The race format was purposely designed as such to allow for the occasions where we will not be able to enter for each and every round for some reason.

Or was it for the addiction to race with friends as the more likely reason for not wanting to miss any race...it is for me anyway....(grin).

Very true about the concept of allowing you to miss a couple of rounds. But every round that you miss will add an additional pressure for you to perform at your best for the balance of the rounds. Don't forget you might face DNF, lousy kart, no form,..... in any of the balance rounds.

For me, it's the addiction to race with friends. At least this is where I can get to enjoy myself and escape from the whole month of office routine + get to cucuk your friends on & off the track.

Laughing out loud

You're kicking yourself about being less aggressive,I'm kicking myself for being too aggressive. Abang Razmyn is right, 2 fin 1st, 1st have 2 fin. BTW, abang Fazz, thanks 4 the advice, it actually improved my racing in the final. Uncle Naza, don't let Afizah race again, I gerun nak race dia lagi lar. I'm afraid of gettin' beat by a girl. No worries Iskandar! Afizah was one scared gal on that day. She hesitated but I encouraged her "strongly" (bad daddy). However, she has to make her own decision for rd 2 and so on. Racing with the gals is quite a motivator....no?. Once upon a time, k2 racing had doses of glamour with Deanna Yusof and Nurul Alis for company but no more......sad lah!

After all, aren't they (Puteri UMNO) receptive to this kind of things...?!?

Pink boleh, any colour oso can.....if it helps the driver feel good and comfortable. That will help to break the monopoly of red and blue suits. Got to get Ijah to decide her choice.....no! no!(she had pink sneakers)
