Round 01, K2 race report - Muhaymin overcomes weather to start with a win
Sunday, 8 January 2006
Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit (CW)
Muhaymin overcame an early kart problem to clinch the first win of 2006. Muhaymin beat Zoolhilmi Muhamad and Fazz Rahman in a rain affected event. Faez Sullivan, Yusnee Yusof and Steward Loke make up the remaining top 6 finishers.
The first qualifying race which began under wet track conditions was won by Steward Loke in group A and Muhaymin in group B. Steward was particularly impressive in the group A Q1 as he increased his lead lap after lap without any dramas in the still wet track. Other drivers were caught out in the wet at various points in the race. Muhaymin took the other Q1 win in group B after missing out the group A Q1 race due to his kart not being ready in time.
The second qualifying winners were Luen (group A) and Tom Tan (group B). On a drying track, Luen took full advantage of his front row start to race towards his first qualifying win in K2. Luen had to fend off an on form Muhaymin who would finish second. Tom, another K3 promotee and the 2005 K3 champion was impressive during qualifyings. Tom had survived a big crash under braking in Q1 and recovered to finish seventh. In Q2, he made sure that he would go straight for the win which he did.
Muhaymin's win and second gave him the top qualifying honours. Second overall in qualifying was Luen followed by an impressive Steward Loke in third. All the top four qualifiers in K2 were in the 70kg minimum weight category. The best 45kg minimum weight category ("K2/45") driver was Zoolhilmi in fifth overall followed by Tom (2nd K2/45; 6th K2 overall) and Fazz (3rd K2/45; 7th K2 overall). The introduction of the new weight categories was starting to look unnecessary.
Muhaymin made full use of his top qualifying position to select the best kart available (#16) except for kart #46 which was banned due to being too competitive relative to the rest. Muhaymin still made quick progress from tenth on the starting grid to move into the lead. Unfortunately for Luen and Henzee, their races had ended much earlier due to a multi-kart incident at turn 4 at the end of the long main straight. These DNFs promoted the drivers in the group B ("coca-cola") final by two places in the end.

The categories are run in normal manner, although at the end of the day the finals are scored for each sub category and the overall position.

Bro Jules, yeah, thanks for the points, and Happy Chinese New Year. Please have a good rest and holiday over the CNY period, and hopefully to connect and celebrate with your family and friends. It's important, in our busy, modern lifestyle, to pause and reflect on the things that really matter in your life, and not to let small things like the My-Kart round 2 event get in the way of such celebration.
And in the spirit of Gong Xi Fa Cai, we thank you for your gift of championship points to us and look forward to more generosity in the future.
