Round 03, K2 race report - Faez Sullivan claims first win
Saturday, 4 March 2006
Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit (CW)
Faez Sullivan became the latest K2 series winner after claiming his first win on Saturday, holding off Shahrul Azlan Ariffin in second and Henzee in third. Yew Siak Jin, round 1 winner A Muhaymin and Fazz Rahman make up the top six finishers. Once again, the K2-70 sub-category drivers dominated the event, with the top ranked K2-45 driver, Fazz (71kg) in sixth place.
K2 report
Qualifying honours went to Abd Razak Halim (K2-45) with two qualifying wins, Fazz (K2-45) and Shahrul Azln (K2-70) with one win each in their respective qualifying groups. Special mention goes to Muhaymin (K2-70) for finishing second to Razak twice, and Luen (K2-70) for his second place finish behind Fazz.

The outcome of the feature race was far beyond the expectation as it was lowest qualifier Faez (starting from pole) who won the race from start to finish. Faez was never troubled as he opened a significant gap by the time the green flag fell.
Top qualifier Razak who had first choice of kart was involved in an incident with Luen and Muhaymin which caused the former to retire on lap 3. Razak was closing in on the battling Muhaymin and Luen (4th and 5th) when an apparent brake failure on Razak's kart caused him to torpedo into the battling duo, ending Luen's race immediately.
In all the melee, Azlan made significant progress through the field from his 8th place grid start. At the end of lap 1, Azlan had dropped to 10th and last, but soon started carving his way through the field. He soon despatched Naza and Fazz on lap 2. He then went past the incident between Luen, Muhaymin and Razak and into fifth place by the end of lap 3. He then had a long dogfight with Yusnee and claimed fourth on lap 4 (Yusnee would retire of chain failure one lap later). Then Azlan set about chasing Henzee (3rd) and Jin (2nd). He passed both for what Azlan thought was the lead and the win on the very last lap (taking Henzee just before the finish line). However, it turned out to be 2nd for Azlan.
The top six finishers: Faez, Azlan, Henzee, Jin, Muhaymin and Fazz.
In the consolation final, Shaeran Baba fought his way from 7th on the grid to win the race. He made quick progess initially leaping straight to second by the end of the first lap. However, he could not make it past early leader Fahmy Rahman and had to fend off Hafiz Hajeedar instead. Hafiz (starting pole) had to fend off Tarmizi instead. Tarmizi was fourth on lap 2 and leaped into the lead by the end of lap 3 despatching Fahmy, Shaeran and Hafiz in the process. In the meantime, Ahmad Hilmy Halim was making ground into fourth on lap 4.
Shaeran soon made his way past Fahmy on lap 4 and then took the lead away from Tarmizi on lap 5. Hilmy then moved up to 3rd as the resistance from Fahmy fell away.
The top six finishers: Shaeran (K2-70), Tarmizi (K2-70), Hilmy (K2-45), Patrick Tan (K2-70), Hafiz (K2-70) and Ashraff Dewal (K2-70).
K2 championship update
The overall top six positions in the K2 class is the closest yet with only 12 points the difference. The top three of Muhaymin, Faez and Fazz were separated by a mere 3 points after 3 rounds.

Fazz is the only K2-45 driver in the top six which gives him a 12 point lead over rival Razak in second. However the battle in the K2-70 sub-category is a close fought affair between Faez & Muhaymin and the likes of Naza and Azlan.
It looks like the K2 class need not be split into the two weight classes.

Nohad:
It had been a hectic day and most interesting racing day (lots of dogfight) I had so far in the series this year, even though we had done only 3 rounds and I hope this sort racing dogfight will continue till the end of the year.
I was selected into the K2 B group. I was balloted kart 29.
Started on 3rd row P5 for heat 1 but when the race started, I lost some positions to Shaeran Baba, Henzee & Ashraff. My kart was not in tip-top condition as the low-end torque was slightly weak (believe the mixture is slightly off) and it understeers slightly on right turns + inconsistent brakes (long travel brake pedal, press lightly no grip, press a little harder the wheels lock).
Was following the main pack and keeping very much in touch with the train consisting of Azlan, Henzee, Shaeran & Ashraff. Suddenly just after taking the hair-pin just after parabolic, I suddenly saw (didn’t actually see what really happen as I was concentrating on taking the hair-pin) Henzee was sliding on the left curb & Shaeran going off to the right side of the track and Yusnee cutting across the grass just after the tyre barrier (taking a shortcut?).
I followed Azlan thru to turn 2 with Ashraff in front of us and all the sudden the rear wheel of Ashraff’s kart flew off while coming out of turn 2. Azlan slowed down to avoid the runaway tyre and I managed to sneak pass Azlan.
The next person on my target is Yusnee. Managed to catch up to him and was following closely behind him and waiting for a chance to pounce him. Managed to overtake him on one occasion at turn 3 but he overtook me back on the straights. My weak pick-up + my heavy belly must have let me down on this but Yusnee with his skill (even with brakes failure) is just too much for me. Tried to pounce him again but he did not leave any gap for me to sneak-in. While having a dog fight with Yusnee, I could see Azlan was catching up to us and I was getting worried. The position held on to the end of the race.
For not being able to pass Yusnee cost me a place in Final A by 1 point & 1 position. Frust!!
I was balloted kart 29 again for Heat 2. The handling of the kart has somehow improved since heat 1.
Started on 3rd row P5 again for heat 2. The race started and I lost some positions to Yusnee, Luen & Fazz. Was following the main pack and I was caught up behind Ashraff. Had some dogfight with him for 3 laps before managing to pass him at turn 3. But during the chase, Azlan overtook us like a hot knife slicing thru butter. By the time I overtook him, Luen & Shaeran is already ½ way down the long straight. Put a strong chase to them and I could see I was catching up to them but ran out of laps.
For FINAL B, opted for kart 22. For being the 1st person to choose my kart, I started from last position and that is going to make my life difficult. At the start, the mid-pack starters were slightly slow off the line and I was somehow slightly delayed but still manage to pass Azlee & Raja Feizal by turn 3. Managed to squeeze pass Ashraff on the 2nd or 3rd lap on the straights and I fixed my sight on Hafiz. Saw Fahmy is leading the pack consisting Tarmizi, Shaeran, Hilmy, Hafiz & myself and was wondering when he will succumbed to pressure and true enough he made a mistake on the parabolic turn and we managed to squeeze him.
Saw Shaeran, Tarmizi & Hilmy started to pull away from Hafiz & myself, I put up a strong fight to Hafiz hoping him to make a mistake. As I was engrossed in the dogfight with Hafiz, Ashraff sneaked up and passed me on turn 2 when I made a mistake by a gap on the inside line of turn 2. I was lucky my kart has a slightly better top end speed and I managed to pass him on the long straight. I tried different angles to attack Hafiz and I however figured out where to pounce him. On the last lap, I was waiting for my chance to pounce him again. Tried on the turn 3 but did not materialize and I followed closely to him on the parabolic and onto the right hairpin. As he exit the right hairpin and went to the right side of the track to steer into the left hairpin, I squeezed into the inside line of the left hairpin and blocked off his line and I managed to hold my position in the acceleration to the finish line.
Tough fight for all the races but worth every sen of it.

Thanks for the great personal account. I can assure you that these dogfights will be there throughout the year and beyond. It has been for me.

NIce one! Like I mentioned in the other post, the "funniest moment" of the weekend was seeing Ashraff's tyre flying high into the sky, and in the next lap, seeing him do the "walk of shame" back to the pits...heh heh...
But I didn't know YOU were the one that benefitted out of that incident....verry the sneaky ah...
I loved Kart 22...very steady round the corners, excellent top end speed, a real mean machine to slice through the pack like a "hot knife through butter"!

how come the K2/45 dudes are not doing too well this year?? 4 of the top 5 are K2/70 (actually 5/5 if you consider Fazz IS putting on a bit of weight lately!)...must be Edy's powderrrful Nasi Lomak ... by the way, where WAS Edy last weekend?.....I missed breakfast and was looking forward to my monthly sambal fix!!...and to make things worse, no Karipap either!....cheh!

yeah.. been eating too much. but you should quit complaining about weight disadvantage.

K2 is a "heavyweight" class mah!(depending on which angle you interpret "heavyweight").
Only 4 k/45 cat. drivers in this round.
But look at K3, most of the top drivers are in k/45 category.
Good thing I'm already in K2. No regrets so far but getting very light on the wallet.

Sorry dudes, this acquisition of Marconi by Ericsson has proved to take up a heckuva lot more of my time than previously anticipated
Sabor, sabor... your friendly Nasi Lomak man aims to be back in Rd4... and what about the karipap man, when will you be making your next appearance eh...?

Ya loh, and I really hope that CT will not surprise mykart with a rental increase in the wake of the recent fuel price hike....cos that could cause more memebers to miss a few races.
