Round 10, K2 race report - Razak's late charge pips unfortunate Zool to championship

Saturday, 4 November 2006
Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit (CCW)

Championship update

Veteran Abdul Razak Halim (aka Pak Cik) wins his second consecutive K2 race and in the process pips unfortunate series leader Zoolhilmi Mohd to his first K2 championship victory. Razak succeeds two time champion Fazz Rahman who had a day to forget (he finished fifth overall). Zool had an unfortunate mechanical failure in the final which costed him the championship. Both Razak and Zool finished the K2 championship overall with the same 99 pts (although Razak had to drop 2 pts as he had score in 9 out of 10 rounds). On countback Razak scored more points (253 pts despite dropping 38 pts) than Zool (230 pts) in qualifying.

Tarmizi and Nazaruddin finished third and fourth in the overall championship in a spirited final son and father battle.

Race update

Razak overcame the initially wet conditions to win the final round of the 2006 K2 championship season. The win is his second of the year following the win in round 09. Second place went to Jules Ng returning from a competition in the expert karting series elsewhere, and hassled all the way to the flag by Alexander McNab in third. Shaeran Baba, Tarmizi and Nazaruddin round up the top 6 finishers.

Razak's championship challengers all stumbled at the last hurdle. Top qualifier of the day (and round 09 championship leader), Zool succumbed to a mechanical failure in the final race. Whilst Tarmizi and Naza had their own private battle and failed to take advantage of Zool's misfortune. Meanwhile 2003-2005 champion Fazz had a day to forget with a combination of mistakes and bad fuel mixture. Fazz was not a factor on the day.

Qualifying honours went to Zool with 36 pts. Qualifying wins were shared four ways amongst Zool, Razak, Jules and Tarmizi.

Drivers are encouraged to provide their own account of the race as comments to this thread.

Well done Razak!

»

TheFazz:

TheFazz's picture

it has been a closely fought season in K2.

well done to razak for a well deserved victory. commiserations to zool who had the misfortune in the final race.

for me, it had been a tough season. the competition had gained quite a lot of experience and i could not longer use my experience as any advantage.

zool had been particularly impressive throughout the year. the father and son combination of naza & tarmizi also making life difficult. then there is muhaymin, huffiz and jules spoiling my party every once in a while. Smiling

the round 10 race itself was perhaps the worst i have done since i started my-kart with azlan. in truth, i should have done better as the karts weren't that bad. yes, each kart had problems with the fuel mixture, but my lack of progress in qualifying was more due to my own doing. i pushed too hard to make up positions as i truly wanted to win round 10 and retain the championship. at the end of round 09, zool was 15 pts ahead of me. I had to win and hope that zool scored no more than 4 pts. but in the end, it would not have been enough anyway. i was pushing for 1st... but instead i pushed myself out of contention altogether.

upon reflection, a more realistic target would have been 2nd, which could have meant less push during qualifying on my part.

but i guess i learn something new today.

in the first qualifying i drew kart #7. the kart had some problems with the mixture at the beginning, but not too bad. i held my fourth grid position all the way round to the esses. it was at this moment, that i pushed too soon to pass luen, but spun off (due to the wet conditions) and caused the engine to die immediately. i got started again, but my aim was not to finish last. i did pass azlan a couple of laps from the end. azlan was sunday driving on kart #9.

in the second qualifying, i drew kart #6. the kart was pretty good but the power delivery was problematic. at the rolling start, my kart sputtered almost to a halt, but then got going but a long way behind the field. i soon caught up and thanks to a bunch of spinners ahead of me, i got up to third and was now chasing my championship rival zool, and the person that could ruin my party: jules.

under braking, the power wouldn't drop enough, so exiting the second hairpin, i had too much speed and ran wide and into the tyre barriers while chasing jules and zool. again... i was pushing for the win, and pushed too hard. i should have erred towards caution knowing the power problem. this was sorted out after the race.

my poor scoring in the qualifying phase meant i was out of championship contention for good.

the final race was equally bad. i had very few choices of karts, but decided to take something familiar and opted for #7. it turned out that #7 was worst in the final compared to when i drove it in qualifying 1. although i was on the front row, as the green flag fell i had to wave everybody past as my kart was sputtering for about half a lap, until it got enough air into the engine when it started to pick up. by then, my race was over. out of the 15 drivers in k2, i decided not to finish last.. so chased chris will all i had and did so on the last lap. sorry chris and thanks! Smiling

Yes, this was an interesting season..."macam macam ada!!" Smiling

do we have another "Datuk Z-type" dynasty in the making? he heheh...

yeah lah..."kacau" only. I was taking my own sweet time waking up on track....only to be hassled left right and centre by these inconsiderate ppl! I was truly enjoying my Sunday drive, despite it being Saturday morning, and didn't even notice the kart was set incorrectly and the air intake was facing towards ground the whole time. I thought my slow speed was due to the "post Hari Raya open house" effect on my weight!! My apologies to Alex...he had to suffer the same kart #9 in his Q1 round!

TheFazz wrote:

...hey, leave Jules alone. He's a great guy, went out of his way to ensure that I remained 1 championship point ahead of Alex!! The only issue I have with Jules is his ability to execute simple instructions, like when Fazz asked him and Ashraff to "help Azlan at the registration counter", it did not mean "beat the crap out of Azlan at the registration counter"... hmm...

don't worry, take pride in the fact that being out of contention means that we have met our objectives of building up grassroots motorsports, and nurturing and growing talents among the group. You and I (well, you more than I!) were hogging the tops of the championship tables in the not too distant past, but now I believe we are competing with the best in the Klang Valley (the other "hot group" being those Shell Cyberjaya dudes...) and look forward to more interesting duels and challenges next year!

As mentioned in the rd10 registration thread, I had the same kart #7 for the second qualifying. I knew I'm going to suffer even during the warm-up lap and I was hoping the carburation will sort out during the race but apparently did not.

Yip Yen was slow off the start and I have to lift off the throttle a moment and when I throttled back, the kart was struggling to build up speed. Aaargghhh!
Managed to catch to YY after the esses and while trying to overtake YY, Tarmizi came up and overtook us and I have move off line. After that, I had hard time just trying to keep up with them as the kart was real slow coming out of slow corners. What was so frustrating is I could see YY, Tarmizi & Ashraff just in front of me but there is nothing I could do to get closer to them (if only I had a better kart. sigh!)

Well done to Razak for his rd 10 win and denying Zool the overall 2006 title due to an unfortunate mechanical failure which I was not aware of until the race was over. But this very close TAG finish was expected and luckily it was not a DNF for him.

I told Tarmizi the night before that to win, we need to get into the final A group....thats the priority! That was achieved and the stressful ordeal of trying to ballot the kart for the finals was next. Thank heavens! managed to secure #8, the same kart that suited my driving style in Q1., good top end and a wee bit tail happy. I told myself, wow! old man, this is your chance.

Starting on P4, I had my sights on Shaeran (P1), Muhaymin (P2) and Alex next to me on (P3) with the hot guys hissing and grunting just behind my ears. Than the green flag dropped and before you realise it, mayhem at T1 and in a flash a few drivers went passed me at the fast parabola. Very soon I had that pelumba haram guy nibbling at my tail and than he passed me on the longest staight and I am sure he must be laughing his **&&%#@ off. That got me real mad and I would get close to him at the slow cornors but he drew slowly away at the straights. I decided to keep my position....yeah right!

Oh no!, its my own blood who is now by my side into a slow cornor. Expect no favours from me junior unless you are on P1. I decided to do battle with him (some thrilling dogfights ensued - at times I told myself that hey! this cant be right!) but again he would slowly drew away on the straights, just like what Shaeran did. I begin to wonder whether this #8 is starting to give up on me (that airbox intake prefer to face the ground). Thats not the end of my misery. This time its Muhaymin who had dogfights with me for the last couple of laps to the finish. Than at the last hairpin in front of the pitstop, he spun (why Min?) and in a flash I gleefully steered over the kerb to avoid contact and crossed the finish line (thanks Muhaymin!).

So, there you go and thanks to all of you guys for the thrills and spills. Lets hope that those k3 buayas will join the k2 series next year and more juniors (so far we only see two of them) will come forward.

Now to work on the k1 thing as the final bridge to the expert series!

wow this is a gripping account of the finals, complete with dogfights and father son dilemma..reminds me of luke skywalker vs darth vader. true enough the offspring triumphs. i think the force is strong in that young man,we better watch out for these aliens next year!

Looks like the younger generations will be ruling K2 soon. I know Sabelt will be coming over.

Old folks like me will be relegated to kacau daun category very soon in this case.

Hopefully I could participate in it ASAP. It will be very much nicer to drive a kart which is setup to my own liking, hopefully by myself.

WELL DONE TO THE SENIOR CITIZEN....MACAM MACAM ADA!!!!!!! MORE LIKE..MACAM MACAM BOLEH...

»

Jules:

Yes, very well done to Uncle Razak which goes to show we the "more experienced" ( read ; older! LOL ) can indeed offer more ala ' Macam macam Ada!!!"

Razak is the deserving champion as I see he has improved a fair bit this year - in the sense he is more controlled and patient, I saw how he caught Alex in one of the heats and pass him for a placing. Maybe he can confirm my observation.....

Onwards to my races.......heat 1, I drew kart #10 which had poor throttle response but luckily quite neutral to drive and a good top end........which was of not much use in the WET. For those who drove in the second group like Razak, maybe the end of day could be different. Zool drove with us in the 1st group, so who knows? I think I finished 3rd...2nd was Naza by a long mile! bugger!

Heat 2 - he he Kart #14. Starting on top spot, I did not wait to be invited. At the start CHris did get a slight half kart but I guess he braked earlier into T1. After that, it was a smooth drive home or so I tot. Kart #14 on the limit ie. at parabola loop was very twitchy and whilst it has a great engine, the setting was not optimum.....for my tired body of course!

For the finals, Kart #9 was the obvious choice since the other top 2 was chosen by Razak and Zool. The start was interesting as the only thing I recall was seeing Uncle Razak zooming off from the right into the lead. He was as though driving on the kerb to achieve this!!!!

I reeled a few ppl in and settled into 3rd but soon caught Alex mid way....and noted that whilst he was fast off the slow corners due to his weight, the advantange was less ( or none perhaps due to kart ) at the fast bits......so the stalking began and for those who saw it - I just did a classic "sneak thru and hold" passing move on the last lap - 5 corners from home!

By this time of me making this move, I think Uncle Razak took the flag already as he was NO WHERE to be seen!!!

All in all - I think not a bad day's work and a position 23 overall...sigh!!!

Fazz - well, hard luck this year and guess the work is indeed eating into you.... Smiling Btw, Zool - what happen to ur top choice Kart 14?

FORZA MY-KART!

Congratulations to all winners. My observation from driver point; Kart 9 got problems in the early stage, Jules don't believe me! City Karting mechanic changed the airbox and tuned the air/fuel mixture. Man, it was flying from then onwards! Razak took the opportunity to drive Kart 9 to his championship, good job you deserved the title. I am still thinking, the way you caught up and left me behind, I think some weight is require to hold you back a little so I can la fight a little bit...! Then came Jules, hey! am I that slow or what...?!! I was holding him back a little until I left the 'door' wide opened for him to pass me on the last lap. It must be pressure/pleasure from a professional driver, good lesson learned. Great time with all of you guys. Looking forward to the next session. Takecare y'all.
